Location:Based preferably in Senegal, Chad, Mali, Burkina Faso , Niger or in any country where Oxfam has an office in West Africa.

Contract: Fixed term (Up to March 31st, 2023)

One Oxfam Grade: C1

The Role

Oxfam West Africa Region is looking for the Regional Protection Advisor to lead and support to Oxfam West Africa country teams for humanitarian scale up and ongoing support of large humanitarian responses in West Africa and effectively contribute to the development of regional and country level capabilities in protection.

Who we're looking for

A candidate with the follow skills and qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree (or sufficient relevant experience) in Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law or refugee themes.
  • A minimum of 5 years involvement in humanitarian response work, preferably in field-based protection work in conflict or insecure environments as well as experience of working in a senior advisory role in a humanitarian context.
  • Strong conceptual and practical understanding of protection issues and specifically Oxfam’s approach to and role in protection work including advocacy
  • Knowledge and understanding of protection at the field level, including the constraints, sensitivities and risks associated with such work
  • Analytical skills and strategic thinking skils.
  • Understanding of key thematic issues for Oxfam: GBV in conflict, displacement and refugee issues, livelihoods and protection
  • Strong understanding of gender-related aspects of protection work. Commitment to gender equity, diversity and equal opportunities
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences and gender issues, as well as the commitment to equal opportunities.
  • Ability to demonstrate an openness and willingness to learn about the application of gender/gender mainstreaming, women’s rights, and diversity for all aspects of development and humanitarian work.
  • Commitment to Oxfam’s safeguarding policies to ensure all people who come into contact with Oxfam are as safe as possible.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

Desirable

  • Experience working in the WAF region and understanding of the culture and context of the region.
  • Spoken local language skills an advantage.
  • Experience of providing support to field programs, especially in community-based protection.
  • Experience of staff development and training skills.
  • Knowledge of Oxfam approaches.
