Oxfam is a global movement of people working together to end the injustice of poverty.
That means we tackle the inequality that keeps people poor. Together we save, protect, and rebuild lives. When disaster strikes, we help people build better lives for themselves, and for others. We take on issues like land rights, climate change and discrimination against women. And we won’t stop until every person on the planet can enjoy life free from poverty.
We are an international confederation of 19 organizations (affiliates) working together with partners and local communities in the areas of humanitarian, development, and campaigning, in more than 90 countries.
Who We Are
For over 50 years, Oxfam has been working in the Horn, East, and Central Africa (HECA) region, focussing its programs in the following countries: Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, Sudan, and Uganda. We have a strong network of country teams who deliver our work and augmented by regional and global capacity on fundraising, advocacy and learning advisory support.
The Horn, East and Central Africa is facing its driest conditions in 40 years, while South Sudan has suffered a fifth consecutive year of severe flooding. Prolonged drought and extreme flooding, on top of conflict, locusts, and climate change, have devastated harvests and rangelands and triggered a dramatic inflation of food prices. The affected population is struggling to access food, and more than 20 million people are facing severe food insecurity. Oxfam is providing assistance including cash transfers, emergency food and livelihood assistance packages, and WASH assistance (clean water, sanitation facilities and hygiene promotion).
Oxfam has declared this situation a regional Category 1 on 22/02/2022. Response plans were already in place for all countries, but these are under revision to ensure they are consistent with Oxfam’s commitments and expectations. At the moment, the combined target for the responses is 1.3M people and the funding gap is EUR 36M.
Oxfam has been responding in Somalia, Kenya, and South Sudan since 2021. Th response in Kenya is partner-led, and 60% of the response in Somalia is implemented with partners. Oxfam South Sudan is working with one partner, whilst in Ethiopia the emergency phase of the response will be directly implemented by Oxfam.
